The importance of continued training in the workplace

As your business expands, the training of existing employees can often be overlooked. Continued training and development is vital for all companies to ensure they are kept informed of the latest trends, changes in legislations and software updates.

It is often tempting for employers to cut corners, especially when it comes to staff training. This can be due to many factors; the attitudes of staff towards training and development, the financial implications and also the time associated with a member of staff attending a course. Avoiding training for the purpose of cutting costs can be counter-productive. For the limited time that staff will spend out of the office, the business will have the advantage of increased production, simply by building on existing skill sets.

The best way to establish which training courses will benefit your staff is to consider their opinion. There are often tasks within an employee’s day or week where they feel that extra training would be beneficial. The additional knowledge which could be gained by attending a course would boost their confidence thus improve productivity.

The approach to learning has vastly changed over the past ten years. People are much more likely to come away from a course feeling refreshed and prepared to attend one in future providing the course was; informative, interesting and relevant. Training can vary for each employee dependent on their learning style. One employee may prefer text book classroom based, whereas the next may benefit from interactive web based courses. Ensure the course method coincides with the individuals’ particular learning style. Learning styles can easily be identified by asking your staff to complete a questionnaire.  Whatever you decide to proceed with ask your employees for their views on training, as in order to benefit from it, they need to want to do it. To make the most out of the training experience for the employee and the company ensure you encourage feed-back. For the purpose of future training for employees, it is essential you know if the course and training provider were successful in achieving your goals.

For small businesses especially, having a structured training and development scheme in place can ensure your employees gain experience in several areas of the business. This is more beneficial as it makes annual leave and absences easier to cover therefore, causing minimal disruption to the smooth running of your business.

If a staff member feels confident and valued within their job role, they are; firstly, more likely to have a high level of job satisfaction and secondly, less likely to look for a new opportunity elsewhere. This ultimately will result in having a happy workforce with low level of employee turnover.
